Averaged curves (means ± SEM) of [Hb O2] changes during smell exposures. The means were derived from 23 values at each 0.5-s recording. ANOVA for repeated measurements showed a significant difference between the three responses (p < 0.0001). Newman-Keuls post hoc comparison evidenced statistically significant differences as follows: control vs colostrum (p = 0.0004), control vs vanilla (p = 0.0001), colostrum vs vanilla (p = 0.0001). Statistical analysis of [Hb O2] differences after exposure offset was impossible due to the frequent occurrence of movement artifacts. The panels at the right show magnifications of the first 10 s of recording to visualize onset of [Hb O2] rise. The [Hb O2] values became statistically different from the baseline at 6–8 s for colostrum and at 5 s for vanilla (Newman-Keuls post hoc comparison, *p = 0.002 and **p = 0.03, respectively).

C (craniocaudal) and F (mediolateral) are the optical mammograms obtained using simple light intensity data and show the lower contrast of these images with respect to the N images. Specifically, this figure refers to a 55-year-old Caucasian woman with an invasive ductal breast cancer [UICC pT2 pN0 (0/29) M0 G2 L0 V0] in the left breast (lateral lower quadrant). The major tumor is 3.0 cm in diameter. Clinical examination, highly suspect; x-ray mammography, malignoma; breast ultrasound, malignoma. The dimensions of the breast portion shown in the x-ray mammograms are as follows: (A) craniocaudal projection, 18 cm (base width) × 11 cm (protrusion); (D) mediolateral projection, 18 cm (base width) × 10 cm (protrusion). We observe that the x-ray and optical images cannot be compared point by point because the degree of compression and the compression geometry are different in the x-ray and optical approaches.

Near Infrared Spectroscopy

Gli ossimetri NIRS sono stati sperimentati principalmente sul tessuto muscolare, cerebrale e sulla mammella con applicazioni relative allo studio del metabolismo muscolare, alla diagnosi di disordini vascolari (patologie vascolari periferiche), alla monitorizzazione dell’ossigenazione cerebrale, a studi di imaging funzionale cerebrale (studio condotto su variazioni dell’ossigenazione cerebrale regionale in neonati sottoposti a differenti stimolazioni olfattive (da M.Bartocci et al.)) e di imaging del tumore della mammella.
